Education Requirements & Opportunities for Doctors/Physicians

The education required to become a medical doctor includes two degrees and clinical residencies. Both degree programs include general course studies then doctors can choose a specialty during their residency.

Undergraduate Requirements

You must complete four years of math, English and science in order to enter medical school. Some schools offer pre-med programs that are required to become a physician and offer the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT).

  • You must take an admission test this test takes 5-hours.

  • Biology
  • Critical thinking
  • Verbal skills
  • Writing abilities

Medical School Requirements

The first two years:

  • Book study and laboratory work to prepare
  • Diagnosing and treating illnesses.
  • United States Medical Licensing Examination is administered to students by the National Board of Medical Examiners.
The final two years:

  • Clinical experience
  • Students work under attending physicians to begin their practical training.
  • Second licensing test when students begin their residency training.

Internship Period for Physicians

  • Complete their residency in a 3-7 year
  • Final medical licensing exam
  • 1-year residency program
  • Pass board certification
Once these requirements have been met, a doctor is considered a fully licensed medical professional.
